Why Physical Video Games Still Matter | Moat Games

For most of the history of video games, a game was something you could hold in your hands. It came in a box, on a cartridge, or on a disc. It sat on a shelf, ready to be played again years later.

Today, games are more accessible than ever. Digital storefronts have made it possible for independent developers to reach players all over the world. But something changed along the way.

Ownership quietly became access.

Most games now exist as downloads tied to accounts, platforms, and storefronts that can change or disappear over time. Games can be updated, altered, or delisted entirely. What once lived on a shelf now lives on a server.

At the same time, we are living through one of the most creative eras in independent game development. Small studios and solo developers are creating some of the most interesting and original games the medium has ever seen.

Yet many of these games never receive a physical release.

Moat Games was founded to change that.

We partner with independent developers to create limited physical editions of digitally native games. Each release transforms a digital title into something tangible — a collectible object that can be owned, displayed, and experienced outside the boundaries of a storefront.

These editions are produced with collectors in mind. The goal is not mass retail distribution, but carefully crafted releases that celebrate the game itself and the people who made it. We are doing limited editions, serialized copies, and easter egg variance to provide collectors both the game, and an experience.

Physical media gives games something digital distribution cannot: permanence and presence. A physical copy doesn’t depend on an account, a storefront, or a server. It exists as a complete work that can be played, shared, and collected.

Games are one of the most exciting creative mediums of our time. They deserve releases that feel as meaningful as the work itself.

At Moat Games, we believe the future of games can still include something physical.

In the months ahead, we’ll begin announcing the first titles joining the Moat Games catalog.
